Chapter 5 - The Gallery

The Thomas Teich Photographic Arts Gallery is an elegant, comfortable 700 square-foot space built next to The Darkroom at our Freehold location. It is a studio gallery designed to showcase classic and the latest photographic works as they emerge from the darkroom. Built in the main section of our restored 1820's era barn, it retains many of the original details its high ceilings and post and beam-mortis and tenon construction held together by hand-carved wooden pegs.

Open Friday through Sunday from Memorial Day weekend to December 31st, the gallery showcases the ongoing photographic work of Thomas Teich with a series of exhibitions throughout the year as well as a variety of gift items like folios, calendars, posters, and fine notecards. We have gone to great lengths to create a quiet, personal space for visitors to view and enjoy fine black and white photography. Trading the traditional gallery white walls and noisy hardwood floors for darker, soothing colors and soft carpet underfoot recreates the sensation of walking through a quiet forest. The most significant recent upgrade to the gallery is lighting. Last year, the traditional hot  power-hungry tungsten halogen lights were replaced with LED track lights. Traditional halogen bulbs are much warmer in color and do not faithfully present black and white and color images.

Each par 30 bulb drew 75 watts of power and with at least 20 lights consumed 1,500 watts of power. The new 5000 degree Kelvin LED lights are 75 watt par 30 equivalent but only use 9 watts for a total of 180 watts. They not only save energy and eliminate heat but at 5K color temperature have a very high color rendering index. In effect, they provide rich, contrasty and far more accurate light which makes black and white silver prints especially beautiful.
