This past week I enjoyed the latest popular head cold that seems to be on everyones list of favorites. A weird bug with almost no symptoms aside from severe congestion and fatigue. A real joy. Finally felt well enough yesterday to walk in the woods. After a half mile the wind came up and I ducked down into a small ravine to escape it. This is a spot where I like to photograph ferns in spring which grow along the banks of the tiny creek bed. As I walked along I began to notice some very dramatic ice formations so I decided to shoot a few with my cell phone. Mine is a dumb phone with a poor quality camera useful only for quick shots of plane wrecks or UFO's. Not for serious pictures. I often use it just to make studies…helps keep my eye and brain sharp.
When I loaded the images into my computer for editing, I was amazed at the variety and powerful abstract forms that began to emerge. I was so impressed that I went back today with my 4x5 view camera to capture them properly. Some were still there, others had disappeared overnight and a few I just couldn't find again. I made 10 with the phone and 6 with the view camera. It was so compelling that I am going to go back regularly now. Funny how chance is such a big factor in life and in art also. I hope you enjoy these first 5 images and I will post the other 5 Sunday afternoon.
